- “Women’s peace education is essential for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”
- “The DPCW is the most powerful international instrument for institutionalizing peace.”
Jesmeen Khera, Australia Melbourne Branch manager of the International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG), delivered a presentation on "Building Global Peace and Justice Through Solidarity and Education" at the session "Economic Empowerment of Women Entrepreneurs, Gender Equality, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” hosted by the Belmont Business Enterprise Centre Inc. (Belmont BEC) during the 69th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (UN CSW) on the 10th.
Branch manager Jesmeen emphasized the importance of women’s peace education and the need for international law to end war. She stated, "Throughout history, women have led economies, strengthened communities, and advocated for peace. IWPG’s women’s peace education plays a crucial role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals." She further stressed that for the realization of key SDG goals—SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Global Partnerships)—it is essential for women to be equipped with nonviolent conflict resolution skills, leadership, and decision-making capabilities.
Additionally, she stated, "A unified Korea will heal historical divisions and contribute to global peace and security." Referring to ongoing conflicts in Yemen and Lebanon, she urged the international community to strengthen solidarity and drive real change. She also emphasized, "The Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) is the most powerful international instrument for ending war and institutionalizing peace." She called on world leaders to adopt the DPCW as international law and take concrete action.
More than 80 participants attended the session, including: Irene Natividad (President, Global Summit of Women, USA), Delia Domingo Albert (Chair, ASEAN Society Philippines), Susan O’Malley (Past Chair, NGO CSW, USA), Neelima Basnet (1st Vice President UN, BPW International, Nepal, UK)
The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a functional commission under the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It holds annual meetings at the UN Headquarters in New York to share policy cases for women's rights promotion, evaluate the Women, Peace, and Security agenda, and assess the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA).
Through this UN CSW69 session, IWPG aims to expand global partnerships through women’s peace education and continue its efforts in empowering women economically and advocating for the DPCW to be established as international law.
Meanwhile, IWPG is a global women’s NGO registered with ECOSOC and the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC). It has 115 branches in 122 countries and 808 partner organizations in 68 countries. With the vision of "realizing sustainable world peace," IWPG actively works to expand solidarity, spread a culture of peace, provide women's peace education, and support and advocate for the enactment of the DPCW into law.
